FISHING NEW ZEALAND: NELSON AREA

About the Region

The lodge is 1 ½ hours drive south of Nelson Airport, and 3 ½ hours drive north west of Christchurch international airport.

Nelson is a diverse region with three spectacular national parks, unique landforms and New Zealand's highest sunshine hours. Nelson is one of New Zealand's premier tourist destinations and is the main starting point for trips to Abel Tasman National Park. The surrounding area includes Nelson Lakes National Park, which is centred on two beautiful alpine lakes, and Kahurangi National Park with its enormous range of forest and mountain landscapes. There are plenty of action activities such as white water and sea kayaking, jet boating, white water rafting, hiking and of course fly-fishing.

Fishing

The Nelson region has a world-class reputation for memorable and rewarding fly-fishing. The Buller River alone has dozens of tributaries, and several of these are considered separate trout fisheries in their own right. The lodge is close to the Matakitaki River, one of these tributaries. It is also possible on a day's excursion to fish on the renowned Motueka and Grey river systems. Helicopter fly-ins to the two adjacent National Parks open up even more opportunities for wily large trout in uncrowded rivers and fabulous scenery. Your typical catch will be in the 3 to 4 pound range, with the chance of a 6 or 7 pounder, and on a really good day you might get the chance to outsmart a 9 to 10 pound monster!

The Lodge

The 5-star lodge, with three guest suites, is 10kms (6 miles) south of the historic township of Murchison, directly across from the Matakitaki River, and set on 260 acres of lush farmland. From its elevated position, there are glorious valley views from all rooms. There is an interesting historic walkway nearby, following the Six Mile creek through beech forest.

Facilities provided include:
  • Stylish guest rooms with spacious ensuites with powerful showers, and private verandahs with very special views. Choose from SuperKing, Queen or Twin.

  • Tea, coffee and drinks facilities.
  • Drying room for fishing and outdoor gear.
  • Privacy, relaxation and panoramic views.
  • Broadband internet and Wi-Fi wireless network throughout the lodge. Charge applies.

About your Hosts

Steve and Wendy Wood moved to New Zealand 15 years ago from the UK. Steve has been fly-fishing since his school days in Hampshire, where he grew up close to those iconic trout rivers - the Test and Itchen. When the opportunity arose for a company transfer to New Zealand, there was no hesitation! Since moving to New Zealand, Steve has fished most rivers and decided that the Murchison area offered fabulous fishing opportunities. Ten years later, Steve and Wendy planned a fishing lodge. Designed by a local architect to sit comfortably in its naturally beautiful surroundings, the lodge is built predominately of timber and is sited for the natural warmth and light of the sun, and for its panoramic river views. While Steve does not guide, he loves to talk fishing almost as much as he loves to fish. The lodge also has two friendly Labradors, Kizzy & Oscar, who live outside. These are two lucky dogs with a view, who are shaping up nicely as fishing companions!
