Wilderness Fishing Trip New Zealand
New Zealand Fishing Vacation

Fishing in New Zealand can offer an all inclusive wilderness fly fishing trip, tailored to your specific needs. Pursue wild rainbow & brown trout by day and enjoy wilderness river cabin accommodation by night.

"The trip to the Whanganui is not to be missed! Combining spectacular scenery with great fishing, wonderful food, opportunities for horseback riding and hunting, and wonderful guides, it makes for a unique taste of New Zealand in the bush. Our guides, brothers Danny and Kelvin, could not have been more accommodating. It was the highlight of our trip to New Zealand."

Bob and Teresa Proctor, Atlanta, Georgia USA

"The days at the Whanganui River lodge were, without doubt, one of the highlights of our trip. It was a great experience for all three of our group and it is most certainly a main topic whenever we talk with friends about out trip to NZ."

Philipp, Austria

We can organise a variety of wilderness fishing trips and adventures that include helicopter and fixed-wing fly-ins to famed wilderness fishing rivers such as the Mohaka, Rangitikei, & Ngaruroro. We can also organize one day or multi-day raft fishing trips.

On this page we'd like to introduce you to a unique wilderness fishing experience on the pristine Whanganui River, which has impressive stocks of both rainbow and brown trout, and which does not require a helicopter for access, meaning you get all the benefits of wilderness fishing without having to pay up to $NZ2000 for helicopter fees. This privately owned 3000 acre property offers approximately 6 kilometers (3 1/2 miles) of water, and while the water itself is not private, it is extremely difficult for anyone else to access - it truly is wilderness!

From Taupo, the drive to the entrance of the property is about an hour (or about 15 minutes from the small town of Taumarunui). By jeep from there, the journey into the riverside bungalow is another hour, with spectacular views along the way. By horseback, the cross-country journey takes about 2 hours. Kelvin will be your fishing guide, while non-fishing partners will be accompanied by Danny or Rocky on bush walks or horse treks through magnificent native forests, discovering our native flora and fauna and native birds, and if interested, learning about the history of the area and its people.

Your bungalow offers rustic yet comfortable accommodation, with a bedroom and private en-suite. Meals are prepared by your hosts under the unique patio, within a stone's throw of the river, while you enjoy a few cold beers or some fine New Zealand wine (liquor also available upon request).

Package options

To fully enjoy this unique experience, it is recommended that you stay at the river for at least 2 nights. Non-overnight trips are not an option unless you are flying in via helicopter (NZ$1200 - $2000 depending on departure point).

Our recommended itinerary is 3 days and 2 nights, as follows:

  • On day 1, depart Taupo at around 9am, arriving at the front gate of the property at around 10am. Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee at the unique New Zealand-style cabana, hand-crafted by Danny, then hop in the jeep for the adventurous journey across rugged-yet-magnificent mountain & bush terrain.
  • Arrive at the cabin, unpack, and begin familiarizing yourself with the river and surrounds while Danny prepares lunch.
  • Take to the river with Kelvin, fishing until dark if you choose. Hiking and horseback options for non-fishing partners.
  • Outdoor riverside dinner beneath unique sheltered patio. Sleep in your private cabin.
  • On day 2, rise at your leisure, have a cup of tea or coffee and head off for an hour or two of fishing before breakfast.
  • Breakfast followed by fishing & other activities as desired.
  • Lunch followed by fishing & other activities as desired.
  • Evening meal around the campfire, with ample supplies of your favorite alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages (and a guitar available for those wannabe rock stars)
  • On day 3, rise at your leisure, have a cup of tea or coffee and head off for an hour or two of fishing before breakfast.
  • Breakfast followed by fishing & other activities as desired.
  • Lunch followed by fishing & other activities as desired.
  • Pack up mid afternoon, head back across the mountain to the front gate, and enjoy tea, coffee or a beer before departing for the trip back to Taupo.

Package Inclusions

  • Pickup from and return to Taupo
  • Cross-country trip into riverside bungalow via jeep or horseback
  • All meals
  • Private bungalow accommodation
  • Guiding (fishing, horseback riding, bush walking). Unlike by-the-day guiding experiences that typically have you on the river by around 10am and off the river by 5pm, your guides will work from first light till dark if that's what you want
  • All necessary gear (fishing rods, waders, flies, etc.)

Additional Activities

In addition to fishing, horseback riding and bush walks, the following activities are available for those who are interested:

  • Wildlife photography (goat, deer, birds)
  • Hunting
  • Night-time spotlight hunting for possum (New Zealand possum are quite different from American or Australian possum - a bit like a small raccoon. They are a threat to our native birds)
  • Eeling. Set a baited line overnight and there's a good chance you'll have caught an eel by morning. Danny will even fry it up for breakfast if you're interested.
  • Hangi feast. A hangi is the traditional Maori method of preparing meals, not unlike a luau in Hawaii.

Package does not include:

  • Fishing licenses
